Join us for a tasting with Randall Grahm, winemaker & owner of Bonny Doon Vineyards!
While Bonny Doon Vineyard began with the (in retrospect) foolish attempt to replicate Burgundy in California, Randall Grahm realized early on that he would have far more success creating more distinctive and original wines working with Rhône varieties in the Central Coast of California. The key learning here (achieved somewhat accidentally but fortuitously) was that in a warm, Mediterranean climate, it is usually blended wines that are most successful. In 1986 Bonny Doon Vineyard released the inaugural vintage (1984) of Le Cigare Volant, an homage to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and this continues as the winery’s flagship/starship brand.
Since then, Bonny Doon Vineyard has enjoyed a long history of innovation – the first to truly popularize Rhône grapes in California, to successfully work with cryo-extraction for sundry “Vins de Glacière, the first to utilize microbullage in California, the first to popularize screwcaps for premium wines, and, quite significantly, the first to embrace true transparency in labeling with its ingredient labeling initiative. The upside of all of this activity has brought an extraordinary amount of creativity and research to the California wine scene; the doon-side, as it were, was perhaps an ever so slight inability to focus, to settle doon, if you will, into a single, coherent direction.1
Bonny Doon Vineyard grew and grew with some incredibly popular brands (Big House, Cardinal Zin and Pacific Rim) until it became the 28th largest winery in the United States. Randall came to the realization – better late than Nevers – that he had found that the company had diverged to a great extent from his original intention of producing soulful, distinctive and original wines, and that while it was amusing to be able to get restaurant reservations almost anywhere (the only real tangible perk he was able to discern from the vast scale of the operation), it was time to take a decisive course correction. With this in mind, he sold off the larger brands (Big House and Cardinal Zin) in 2006 and Pacific Rim in 2010.
In the intervening years, the focus of the winery has been to spend far more time working with vineyards in improving their practices, as well as on making wines with a much lighter touch – using indigenous yeast whenever possible, and more or less eschewing vinous maquillage, (at least not to Tammy Faye Bakker-like levels). Recently, Randall has purchased an extraordinary property in San Juan Bautista, which he calls Popelouchum, (the Mutsun word for “paradise,”) where he is profoundly intent on producing singular wines expressive of place. There are also very grand plans afoot to plant a dry-farmed Estate Cigare vineyard. #staydooned.

Please join us for a tasting with Steve Tonella of S.R. Tonella Cellars!
About Steve ~
Steve Tonella was born in Napa Valley and grew up living in Sonoma and Rutherford. From an early age he worked in the vineyards with his father and grandfather. Enjoying the hot sun and helping in the vineyard by suckering vines (removing unwanted shoots) tying, training, and irrigating formed his early encounters in vineyards. He says he is amazed to have survived as the mode of transportation was the infamous 3-wheeler motorcycles that were accident prone and tipped easily.
Fast forward to the turn of the century when Steve began making wine and produced small quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon. College took him to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he earned a degree in Business Administration. After college, Steve entered the high-tech industry and quickly moved into sales leadership positions that took him around the world. Fluent in both Italian and Spanish, he’s lived and worked in Rome, Italy, and Barcelona, Spain, besides stints in England and Japan. During all his travels, the dream of cultivating Rutherford wine never left. After working across three continents, the time had come to resurrect the dream of producing Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon into a reality: The 2010 is the ‘first’ of many vintages to come.
S.R.Tonella Cellars' Story ~
S. R. Tonella Cellars is the culmination of over 100 continuous years in the wine business in Rutherford, Napa Valley. It all started with an earthquake. In 1906 after the great San Francisco earthquake, a huge demand for workers to rebuild the city brought Joseph Ponti, Steve’s great uncle, from Italy to San Francisco. Shortly thereafter, Ponti became the superintendent and initial winemaker at the iconic Beaulieu Vineyards in Rutherford, where he stayed for 43 years. Ponti’s nephew, Steve’s grandfather, Louis Tonella, joined his uncle at Beaulieu when he was just 17 and worked there for several years. Louis inherited from Ponti vineyards located in the Rutherford viticulture region and passed them on to his son Raymond Tonella, Steve’s father. Over the years, Raymond purchased additional vineyard acreage, as well as managing other Rutherford vineyards. Grape growing and wine production have been a part of Steve’s life and family history.
Bringing us to the present, we endeavor to continue this heritage and spirit with
S. R. Tonella Cellars. Our purpose is simply to make history by crafting the best premium Cabernet Sauvignon that represents the best of Rutherford and Napa Valley. A lot of historical events have been written down after-the-fact on the pages of books; but in truth, living history is made every day with family, friends, co-workers and casual coincidental encounters both near and far. It’s those relationships, the real events in our own histories, which have a meaningful impact on our lives. S. R. Tonella Cellar’s aspiration is that our wine is shared to create some small but memorable piece of history with everyone who crosses paths with us. And so it begins.

Grenache with small percentages of Syrah, and Carignan
In the glass, the wine shimmers with a pale hue of translucent garnet. Soft aromatics of dried rose petals prevail and invite a tasting. With bright hints of strawberry and ripe stone fruits, the wine leads to an opulent mid-palate. Finishing with purpose, it is long and riddled with layers of texture and grace.
Grenache, Syrah and Carignan
93 points from Robert Parker - Optimum growing conditions with a crowning harvest mark the 2014 vintage. A saturated cardinal hue belted in garnet is revealed in the glass. The nose brims with an impeccable oak profile with shaded oak tree accents. A mineral cast of alluvial soil can be detected as well, which frames a vibrant perfume of red berry fruits, cassis, cardamom, and exotic spices. The entry bursts with a vibrant blueberry and cassis concentrate that is rounded out with the richness of a crème brûlée, or crema catalana. The mid palate has vibrant acidity with distinctive mineral notes of garrigue, stone, and schist. Closing with purpose, the wine boasts silky tannins and a lengthy finish of sublime richness.
Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Mourvedre
The wine has a profound cardinal hue with powerful aromas of rhubarb compote, savory roasted plum, star anise and leather. Opening with potent flavors of cola, dark fruits, raspberry jam and baking chocolate, it transitions to offer beguiling flavors of forest floor, fennel, and earthy Asian spices. With a purposeful finish, the wine closes with shards of acidity and lengthy polished tannins.
Old-Vine Grenache and Syrah
95 points from Robert Parker - Smokey, sweet oak escapes the glass followed by powerful aromas of black plum, blackberry pie, vanilla bean, violets and freshly cut flowers—all enveloped by a hint of dust and pencil lead. The entry is massive and lush with ripe red fruits, black raspberry, currant and pronounced minerality. Overall, the finish is concentrated yet balanced with beams of acidity and seamlessly integrated tannins that linger on the palate.
*Tastings are always free for our wine club members. $10 for non-members.

Learn about Four Roses Bourbon!
It began when Paul Jones, Jr., the founder of Four Roses Bourbon, became smitten by the beauty of a Southern belle. It is said that he sent a proposal to her, and she replied that if her answer were “Yes,” she would wear a corsage of roses on her gown to the upcoming grand ball. Paul Jones waited for her answer excitedly on that night of the grand ball…when she arrived in her beautiful gown, she wore a corsage of four red roses. He later named his Bourbon “Four Roses” as a symbol of his devout passion for the lovely belle, a passion he thereafter transferred to making his beloved Four Roses Bourbon.
In 1884, Paul Jones Jr, moved his thriving business to Louisville, Kentucky, where he opened an office in a section of historic Main Street called, Whiskey Row.
Four years later, he trademarked the name Four Roses, claiming production and sales back to the 1860s. In 1922, the Paul Jones Company purchased the Frankfort Distilling Company.
In 1943, Seagram purchased the Frankfort Distilling Co. primarily to acquire the most noted and recognized name in the business at that time – Four Roses Kentucky Straight Bourbon. Even though Four Roses was the top selling Bourbon in the U.S. in the 30s, 40s and 50s, Seagram made the decision to discontinue the sale of Kentucky Straight Bourbon here, and Four Roses was moved to the rapidly growing European and Asian markets where it quickly became the top selling Bourbon and remains a top-selling Bourbon in both Europe and Japan today.
In 1966, a young man named Jim Rutledge, who would later become one of the world’s most legendary Master Distillers, joined Seagram in the Louisville Plant’s Research and Development Department. In 1975, he was transferred to Corporate Headquarters in New York until 1992, when Jim asked to return home to Kentucky to help with the Four Roses brand. In 1995, he replaced Ova Haney as the Master Distiller. For the next ten years, he worked tirelessly to return the Four Roses brand back to the States – a dream that would become a reality in hands of a new owner.
In February 2002, the Kirin Brewery Company, Ltd. purchased the Four Roses brand trademark, and named the new acquisition Four Roses Distillery LLC. Four Roses was once again sold in the United States beginning in 2004 and quickly earned a reputation as one of the finest names in the Bourbon world.
In August 2015, Jim Rutledge retired as Master Distiller and Brent Elliott, who worked alongside Jim for 10 years, became the company’s new Master Distiller.
The people who work at the Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg, KY and at our warehouse facility in Cox’s Creek, KY continue the legacy that began with Paul Jones in 1888. Their passion for quality and their pride in handcrafting an award winning Bourbon is evident in the smooth, mellow taste that has become the signature of the Four Roses Brand.

Winemaker and owner, Phillip Staehle, created Enkidu to produce wines of outstanding character, and to get back to “...working with my hands, to use all of my senses, and live and work according to the seasons of the year.” Phil honed his craft at Carmenet Vineyards (Chalone Wine Group) from the mid-80s to the mid-90s. The philosophies at Carmenet still resonate today and were best expressed by the late Dick Graff: “To be the best you can, to not compromise on quality; and most certainly concentrate on every detail.”
As with the spirit of Enkidu, Dick’s words are a guide in our winemaking, business, and life. We strive to create wines that are first and foremost an embodiment of the vineyard. We employ a minimalist approach utilizing techniques which maximize the expression of the fruit, resulting in balanced, complex wines, which frankly, just taste good! Distinctive and expressive, Enkidu wines are carefully crafted and nurtured: the product of our commitment to make the best wines possible.

In 1996, David Jackson purchased an exceptional 28 year old, dry farmed vineyard in northern Calistoga. Shortly after David purchased the vineyard, his entrepreneurial son, Trent got inspired to build on his father's dream. Trent immediately enlisted cult winemaker Kirk Venge to take over. By the late 90's, Trent's focus on quality and limited production attracted a loyal word of mouth following.
In 2002, Trent turned to his sister Kimberly, who holds an MBA from Vanderbilt University. Kimberly restructured the business, re-branded the wine, got placement in top restaurants in the Bay Area and New York, received great press, and expanded distribution.

"Like most great things in life, our story is rooted in the Spirit of Tradition — in our case, the century old tradition of spicing wine. In 2010, Co-Founder, Crystalyn Hoffman spent a year traveling Europe, where she spent much of her time in Germany, the land of her heritage. It was in the Berlin Christmas markets where Crystalyn was first introduced to the century old craft of spicing wine when she had her first sip of Glühwein, a German mulled wine that is served hot around the holidays."
Also like most things, Spicy Vines has decided to branch out from it's original offering of their signature Spiced wine to single varietals. We will be tasting the Chardonnay, Rose and Syrah from Sonoma County. We hope you can join us! Cheers!
